Overview
Fellowes, a leading manufacturer of office and home solutions, needed a modern IoT platform to support their new line of connected air purifiers. The project involved creating both a web application and remote display interface that would allow users to monitor and control their air quality in real-time through an IoT integration.
My Role
I led the UX/UI design efforts and collaborated on the product strategy for both the web application and display interface. Over the course of 6 months, I facilitated a design sprint, conducted user research sessions, and worked closely with the Design team to bring their first connected air purifier to market. My responsibilities included:
Running initial design sprints to define core product features and user journeys
Creating wireframes and prototypes for both web and display interfaces
Conducting usability testing with target users in office and home environments
Initializing a cohesive design system that worked across both digital platforms
Collaborating with other designers engineers to optimize data visualization and controls
Challenge
The primary challenge was creating an intuitive experience across two distinct interfaces while handling real-time IoT data. We needed to:
Simplify complex air quality metrics for commercial users
Ensure reliable real-time data synchronization
Design an interface that worked both on web and physical display
Balance automated features with manual control options
Create meaningful alerts without overwhelming users
Solution We developed an integrated system focused on three core components:
Air Quality Dashboard Created a comprehensive yet simple interface displaying real-time air quality metrics, filter status, and historical data through intuitive visualizations and color coding.
Smart Controls Built an intelligent control system allowing both automated operation based on air quality and manual adjustments through web or display interfaces.
Remote Management Implemented remote monitoring and control capabilities, enabling users to manage their air purifier from anywhere while receiving important alerts and maintenance reminders.
The system architecture prioritized real-time responsiveness while maintaining consistent experiences across both web and display interfaces.
Results
Successful launch of Fellowes' first IoT-enabled air purifier
Positive user feedback on interface usability
Established foundation for future connected product lines
